2012 Vanderbilt Dean Richard Memorial Open - April 14, 2012

The Dean Richard Memorial Open is an annual opportunity to test one's fencing skills against a good cross-section of the mid-south's top fencers. Since competitors travel from all over Tennessee, Georgia, Alabama, the Carolinas, Kentucky, and Mississippi, the Dean Richards Memorial Open is considered a fairly 'strong' competition.

Once again, this year's competition proved that reputation to be true. In Mixed Epee, there were 27 fencers who attended including 3 A-ranked fencers, 6 B's, and 5 C's plus an assortment of D and E ranked fencers. Although that would not seem very tough in other parts of the country where fencing is very dense, here in TN we tend to truly earn our higher ratings. (It's much harder to attain an 'A' classification in TN than in some parts of the country where some cities have more than two divisions inside their borders.)

SO - to win or place in these types of intense events provides a great deal of satisfaction to the combatants - and to the spectators.

On April 14, Peter Wetzel traveled to compete in both Foil AND Epee at this year's DR Open. Out of 27 Epee fencers, Wetzel placed 2nd - defeated by A-ranked Dennis Kraft of Alabama. In the Mixed Foil event, Wetzel won first out of 11 fencers. Congratulations, Peter Wetzel - on a spectacular finish to a great year of fencing!

2012 MARCH MUS OPEN - March 24, 2012

Though the weather outside was a beautiful, sunny 72º with puffy clouds filling the skies, local and regional fencers gathered at the Memphis University School for boys (MUS) to hold another fencing tournament in Foil, Epee, and Saber.

Many fencers from the Memphis Fencers attended - and were victorious!!

L-R: Jake Doan (3rd), Grayson Harber (3rd), Nate Phillips (2nd), Peter Wetzel (1st)

Peter Wetzel (far right in the picture above) captured 1st Place in both Foil AND Epee today, cementing his record as one of the best fencers in the State of TN. Today's first place renewed his D-rating in Foil in the TN Division. He is already rated a 'B' in Epee - today's tournament was not strong enough to upgrade that to an 'A'.

2012 Bluff City Open - March 17, 2012

On a lovely Spring Saturday in mid-March, we couldn't get in to our gym in order to set up for the Bluff City Open's first day of events. SO, we decided the outside area near the gym at CBHS was workable and thus, we taped up our strips and fenced in the very nice weather.

On Sunday, we fenced Saber and Foil - this time inside the Gym and finished out a very nice tournament weekend. Congrats to all of our fencers who strove mightily in the Bluff City Open 2012!!

2012 Feb 25 MUS Open - Feb 25, 2012

The February 2012 of the MUS Open featured Memphis Fencers club fencers excelling in all three weapons. First, in Mixed Foil, the Memphis Fencers team swept the medals 1st, 2nd, and a tie for 3rd: all by Memphis Fencers. Our team also secured 5th, 6th, and 11th out of 17 fencers.

In Epee, our team placed: 2nd, 3rd, 5th, 8th, 12th, 14th/14th (tied), 17th, 18th, 22nd, and 23rd out of 24 combatants. NOT BAD!!! The fencing was intense (usually), comical (at times), and fantastic (once in a while).

In Sabre, we scored 2nd and 10th out of 13 fencers. Way to go!!

2012 Feb 4 Vanderbilt Music City Open - Feb 4, 2012

On Feb 4, 2012, Vanderbilt University Fencing held a really good-sized competition in Nashville. The Epee event had 35 competitors and due to the ratings of the fencers involved, it was an 'A' rated event. That meant the 1st place fencer got an 'A' rating, 2 - 4 received 'B's, and so on...

Peter Wetzel fought vigorously and tied for 3rd place and upgraded his rating from a 'C' to a 'B' rating! Congratulations!! Several other Memphis Fencers competed and did very well, especially given the strength of the competition.

In Epee, our fencers finished in 3rd, 14th, and 15th out of 35 fencers.

In Foil, our fencers finished 2nd, 5th, 7th, 20th out of 33 fencers.

In Sabre, our fencers finished 16th out of 31 fencers.

2012 Feb 10 St. Michael's Cup Epee Exhibition Duel - CBHS

On February 10, 2012, CBHS and MUS Fencing met in an annual DUEL on the basketball court during halftime of their homecoming basketball game. At stake is the vaunted St. Michael's Cup - a rather gaudy, overly done Stanley-Cup-wannabe trophy that the winning school gets to keep - until NEXT year.

This year, the match went to CBHS Fencing and its Captain, Peter Wetzel. In front of over 1,000 rowdy people jammed into the CBHS gymnasium, Peter Wetzel of CBHS and Ben Taylor of MUS attacked, parried, stabbed, struck, and otherwise duelled each other to 5 points in order to capture the Cup.

The St Michael's Cup 2012

After some fierce encounters back and forth, Capt Wetzel of CBHS scored five points to Mr Taylor's 4 and carried the day and the Duel for a THIRD year in a row! Congratulations Peter!
